How to Show Up Differently When Life Sucks

Woman Shouting

Introduction

A couple weeks ago, my partner and I embarked on a short vacation to visit a friend. Little did I know that within the first few days, I would find myself in a less-than-ideal situation - a minor car accident. However, what unfolded after the incident taught me a valuable lesson about resilience and how we choose to show up when life (or even just our own brain) throws us curveballs.

Unexpected Calmness

As I pulled out of the restaurant parking lot after a delightful dinner, my car accidentally grazed the vehicle parked next to me. Instantly, I heard that dreaded "crunch" sound, but surprisingly, I didn't experience the usual wave of panic and anxiety. Instead, a sense of calm washed over me.

Choosing a Virtuous Response

Rather than letting this mishap ruin our vacation, I turned to my partner and said, "Oh boy, let's see how we should handle this." We took a moment to assess the damage, left a thoughtful note for the other driver, and eventually had a chance encounter with them before driving away.

Life Will Be Life

Reflecting on this incident, I realized that life is full of unpredictable events - car accidents, bad weather, conflicts with loved ones, unsatisfying jobs - the list goes on. Life will (probably?) never stop being life, and we can't control what happens to us. However, what we can control is how we choose to respond and show up when faced with these challenging situations.

The Key to a Successful and Peaceful Life

The key to navigating life's murky waters lies in our ability to face adversity with grace and resilience. Learning how to show up when shitty things happen is paramount to leading a successful and peaceful life. Had this incident occurred just a year ago, it might have ruined my entire trip. But now, I can proudly say that I have grown. I responded calmly, demonstrating resilience and the capacity to overcome obstacles.

Lessons and Growth

In every unfavorable circumstance, there lies an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. That car accident served as a test for me, and I am elated to have passed it with flying colors. How else do we truly gauge if we are learning the lessons we set out to learn if we are not tested along the way?
